Current thoughts

After looking into Cornelia Parkers work as my inspiration, the more research I did the more I seemed to find it fitted in with my dissertation research and writing. Rather than my project work, as the ideas I had without the use of the workshops were unattainable.  I was struggling to make maquettes as the random and semi unpredictable shapes I would gain with the reshaping of the objects. This also slowed me down as I was unsure of where I was going. What I did find though that also on my trip to Birmingham, the house in which I stayed had retro styled lampshades dotted around. These caught my eye and I found myself making small paper samples of these whilst doing my previous research. They fitted in to the category of lampshades and light that I was trying to obtain with the metal shades just in a different technique. So I found my self carrying on with these instead.

Cornelia Parker

I went to the Ikon gallery in Birmingham, where they were celebrating their 50th anniversary. For this they had chosen 5 artists work to be redisplayed, one for every decade they have been open. I was lucky enough to catch the 80’s where Cornelia Parkers work titles ‘thirty pieces of silver’ this also being the title of  the piece she originally exhibited here in the 80’s. I really enjoyed this piece, but also the over all way in which they are celebrating fifty years as each piece will be shown in the tower room one after another. transforming only this part of the gallery back to what had been there before, where as the rest of the space goes on as usual.

Third year-Ikon gallery

There were two things that really stood out to me on my visit to the Icon gallery in Birmingham, the Cornelia Parker piece ‘Thirty pieces of silver’ as part of their anniversary celebration. The other was a permanent installation by Oliver beer. Where he changed one of the existing glass panels and replaced it with a glass funnel panel, which allowed movement between the outside and inside the gallery space. Once you held your ear close to the opening you could hear what was going on out side, it was a sunny day whilst I was there so there were many people sat on the grass out side chatting. I could hear this through the piece, it was quite a contrast from the silence of the gallery its self. The piece I believe was called ‘outside-in’ which fits perfectly as you felt apart of what was going on outside as it was so clear and surrounding. Beer definitely captured what he set out to achieve in this subtle installation.
